Share your ‘how we met’ story?
Katie: Our story starts in 2007 – when we were both 14 and 15 years old. Robbie’s family moved back to our hometown and his sister joined my class at school, and quickly became friends – that’s when I took notice of her brother, Robbie.
Throughout our high school years, we crushed on each other, even sharing a moment in a bus stop (quite elegant) one night. It remained a high school crush until 2018 when Robbie happened to pass through Adelaide, and Chelsea made the brilliant suggestion to visit Brighton beach for a coffee catch-up.
It was during that lunch, many years later, that I realised Robbie had grown up – he had an incredibly charismatic presence and a handsome charm. Coffee was abandoned and we spent the entire afternoon indulging in coronas and margherita pizzas at the Espy Hotel.
I felt an immediate attraction towards him. After weeks of exchanging message, countless hours of phone conversations and receiving flowers, he crafted an elaborate website, titled “Katie Ratings”, with a gesture of asking me to be his girlfriend.
Fast forward to 2022, while on vacation in Byron Bay, he posed the most magnificent question a woman could ever hope to be asked in her lifetime.
Share your proposal story?
Robert: It was several weeks before our proposal day that our story began. With the help of Meg Maskell Fine Jewellery, I selected a ring fit for a queen – a handmade 0.62ct kite cut lilac spinel with half halo of brilliant cut diamonds on 18ct rose gold, and the proposal process began.
During the weeks that followed, I took secret photos of Katie’s engagement ring, while she was unaware that her future ring was so close.
The two of us spent a wonderful few days in Byron Bay, where I told Katie I really wanted to catch a sunset atop of the lighthouse, the most eastern point of Australia. I asked a bystander to take ‘a photo’ of us as I whispered, “I’m about to propose, it’ on record!”, and overlooking the most beautiful sunset (and the most beautiful wife to be), I asked Katie to marry me, on 2nd April 2022.
The moment was truly captivating; Katie was speechless for the first time in four years. We celebrated with dinner at Raes at Watergos that night and spent the rest of our holiday on cloud nine.. and on a lot of FaceTimes!
