THE EVOLUTION OF PHOTO BOOKS
Digital printing was introduced to the world in the early 1990s but didn't reach Australian shores until the early 2000s. Digital printing made it possible to print short-run photo books, as little as one copy at a time.
Prior, it was only possible to use print presses for large-scale print runs in the thousands, only afforded to publishing houses with big name authors on their books.
The Coffee Table Book business was born out of this new digital printing technology and a love of photography. The ability to print photo books in short-runs opened up new possibilities for photographers, designers, writers and anyone wanting to self-publish.
Today, it seems as though digital printed photo books have always existed, when in fact it only became possible some 20-ish years ago in Australia. Not long at all in the scheme of printing books.
In 1454 Gutenberg had constructed a working printing press for commercial use (Source). For anyone interested read the ways the printing press changed the world. While it took some 300 years before the first printing press made its way to Australia on the First Fleet in 1788 and used to print official government documents, printing of books, newspapers, and other materials.
We jumped onboard the photo book train in 2006 and have enjoyed watching the advancements in digital printing grow to what we offer today.
One-of-a-kind photo books are a brilliant way to preserve important events and memories; including weddings, elopements, engagements, and updating the family photo album.
It's a tragedy when the precious memories from your milestone event—and the money you spent on hiring the best wedding photographer—end up in Cloud storage or sitting forgotten on a media device in a drawer, collecting dust.
Although the way your wedding photos are delivered has changed, the joy of printing them in a beautiful wedding album remains timeless!
Wedding photo albums have evolved too! Gone are the days of fiddly slip-in or stick-in photo albums. And you can forget the bulky traditional photo albums your parents and grandparents had tucked away only to be brought out on special occasions.
We proudly stand by the quality of our albums, which we believe are the best wedding albums Australia has to offer. With the sleek design of a modern, limited edition photography book, they're truly worthy of a place on your coffee table.
Our professional photo albums feature lay-flat pages in a fine art paper with a matte finish for anti-glare, which makes viewing your printed photos is a real pleasure. The lay-flat format also allows for seamless panoramic images across double-page spreads, showcasing your most stunning moments without interruption.
Proudly Australian made, all our fine art albums are designed, printed, and hand-bound locally in Sydney and Melbourne.
We transform your wedding photos into stunning, handmade heirloom albums designed to last a lifetime.
The Coffee Table Book has a rich history of crafting beautiful wedding albums for couples across Australia and internationally.
Since 2006, as wedding album designers, we've been providing couples with the timeless legacy of their first family photo album—their wedding album.
Founded in 2006, at the height of the digital photography revolution, The Coffee Table Book was the first Australian company to offer high-quality, professionally crafted wedding photo albums directly to couples across Australia, just as digital files became the standard for wedding photographers..
As digital wedding photos were increasingly distributed on CDs, The Coffee Table Book was created to fulfil the need for couples to access professional wedding albums without having to go through their photographer.
Wedding photography has undergone significant evolution since digital cameras came on the scene. In just a short time, we've witnessed the shift from digital files being delivered on CDs to DVDs, then USB drives, and now, digital delivery through Cloud storage and online photo galleries.
The concept for the Wedding Magazine came to life in 2013 after attending a trade show in the USA, where we discovered a premium softcover photo book that could be digitally printed in short runs. We were thrilled—it was exactly what we had been searching for!
When we first introduced the Wedding Magazine to our couples in 2013, they had no idea what to expect. We simply asked them to trust us—and thankfully, they did. Now, years later, the Wedding Magazine has become a popular, cost-effective alternative to the traditional wedding photo album.
The Wedding Magazine was born from the desire to offer couples a unique way to showcase their big day. With the ability to feature hundreds of photos alongside meaningful written words—like vows, song lyrics from the aisle and first dance, heartfelt speeches, the guest list, and credits to the dream team who made it all happen—the printed magazine quickly became a popular keepsake among couples.
Much like magazines such as Vogue, Peppermint, Frankie, Together Journal and Hello May Magazine, our wedding magazine was a contemporary coffee table book. The difference? It was all about them, with the couple featured on the cover.
And just like our albums, the Wedding Magazines are designed and printed locally right here in Australia.
The Coffee Table Book was the first to introduce the Wedding Magazine to couples back in 2013.
Since 2013, the personalised wedding magazine has gained popularity as a unique alternative to the traditional wedding album. This softcover premium photo book, designed in an editorial format, combines photographs and written words to tell a more intimate version of your love story.
Our love for photo books dates back to 2005, the very foundation of why The Coffee Table Book was created in the first place.
In 2013, The Coffee Table Book became the first Australian business to print personalised wedding magazines for newlyweds!
At the time, our founder, a professional wedding photographer, was searching for a more meaningful way for her couples to tell their wedding day story—one that went beyond a simple collection of photos in a traditional album.
Her vision was to create a magazine-style album that not only visually captured the wedding day unfolding but also incorporated written words. This would allow couples to share the stories behind the images, celebrate their connections with loved ones, and showcase a broader selection of wedding photos—far more than just the curated hero shots often found in traditional albums.
